This drawing of musician angels reflects a favorite theme in the work of Giovanni Battista Tiepolo (1696–1770), whose vast ceiling frescoes across Venice, Germany and Spain are filled with angelic choirs playing and singing amid swirling clouds. Tiepolo, the towering decorative painter of the Venetian Rococo, gave music a central place in his celestial scenes — his fresco of the Coronation of the Virgin at Venice's Pietà church has even been compared to a Vivaldi sonata for its vivid rhythm and color. The drawing is held at the Art Institute of Chicago.
