Giovanni Battista Tiepolo (1696–1770) returned again and again over three decades to the comic character of Punchinello, the hook-nosed clown of Italian commedia dell'arte, almost always shown making, cooking and overindulging in gnocchi. The theme nods to “venerdì gnoccolare,” a Carnival feast tradition celebrated in Verona, and Tiepolo — better known for his monumental ceiling frescoes — used these lighthearted drawings and paintings to indulge in pure comic invention.
