This etching belongs to the Capricci, ten fantastical prints Giovanni Battista Tiepolo (1696–1770) made in the 1740s, in which soldiers, sorcerers and idle youths gather around funerary urns and classical ruins in scenes without clear narrative. Tiepolo, the leading decorative painter of the Venetian Rococo, used the series to conjure a moody, theatrical world of his own invention, quite distinct from the luminous, celebratory frescoes for which he is best known.

I wanted to love it and I only sort of like it.
It made the home office feel finished in a way I could not manage on my own. Anyone who loves Tiepolo should have Seated Youth Leaning Against a Urn somewhere in the house. It cost less than dinner out and has given us far more. It has become the thing I point to when people compliment the house.
The warm neutral is a shade or two off from what I expected. The colors in Seated Youth Leaning Against a Urn are close to right and a little cool for my taste. I don't regret it and I don't celebrate it.
