The Meeting of Abraham — Tiepolo Tapestry Blanket

This drawing, made around 1719 early in Giovanni Battista Tiepolo's career, depicts the Old Testament moment when Melchizedek, king and priest of Salem, blesses Abraham after his military victory — a scene traditionally read as prefiguring the Eucharist. Tiepolo (1696–1770), who would go on to become the greatest decorative painter of 18th-century Europe, already shows the dynamic composition and fluid, expressive line that would define his later ceiling frescoes. The drawing is held at the Art Institute of Chicago.
