Glareanus Map (2) — Antique Art Print

Henricus Glareanus, born Heinrich Loriti in the Swiss canton of Glarus, was a Renaissance humanist better known today for his work in music theory, but his 1527 treatise "De Geographia" was the first book devoted entirely to mathematical, rather than descriptive, geography. In it he laid out principles for calculating location and even described the magnetic declination of the compass needle, ideas that fed directly into the maps and globe gores that circulated under his name. Glareanus went on to teach poetry, history, and geography at the University of Freiburg, and his geographic works were reprinted in some 19 editions through the 17th century.
