Glareanus Map — Antique Art Print

This map circulates under the name of Henricus Glareanus, the Swiss humanist scholar whose 1527 treatise "De Geographia" was the first work devoted entirely to mathematical geography rather than mere description of places. Better remembered today as a pioneering music theorist, Glareanus was equally at home calculating geographic coordinates and magnetic declination, and his geographic writing went through some 19 editions across the 16th and 17th centuries. The "JCB" in cataloguing references to this map points to the John Carter Brown Library at Brown University, one of the world's foremost repositories of early Americana and historic cartography.
