Gold Winged Woodpecker — Antique Bird Print

The bird Audubon called the Gold-winged Woodpecker is known today as the Northern Flicker, a large, brown-barred woodpecker that breaks from its family's habits by feeding on the ground, digging for ants and beetles with its slightly curved bill. In flight it flashes bright color beneath its wings and tail, which gave the species its old common name. This plate was painted by John James Audubon and engraved by Robert Havell Jr. as plate 273 of The Birds of America (1827-1838).
