The Great Black-backed Gull is the largest gull species in the world, a powerful predator and scavenger of the North Atlantic coast that preys on fish, eggs, chicks, and even other seabirds. It nests on rocky coasts and islands from the Canadian Maritimes down the eastern seaboard, and its size and dark, slate-black back make it easy to pick out among mixed flocks of smaller gulls. Audubon painted this male for The Birds of America, and the plate was engraved, printed, and hand-colored by Robert Havell Jr. in London in 1835.
