Greenville sits at the southern tip of Moosehead Lake, Maine's largest lake and the gateway to the North Woods, a vast wilderness of forest and waterways that once fueled the state's massive 19th-century logging industry. Timber cut from the surrounding forests was floated down the lake and connecting rivers to mills downstream, and Greenville grew as the supply and shipping point for that logging trade. The town's dramatic setting beneath Mount Kineo, a sheer 800-foot cliff of rhyolite rising straight from the lake, later made it a popular sporting and tourist destination for visitors drawn to the Maine wilderness.
