Before completing his monumental "Paris Street; Rainy Day," Gustave Caillebotte made careful preparatory studies to work out the painting's unusual perspective and the placement of its many figures, a methodical approach closer to academic practice than the more spontaneous methods of some Impressionist colleagues. This study reflects that planning process, showing Caillebotte testing the composition's sharp diagonal recession and cropped figures before committing to the final large-scale canvas. Caillebotte's careful preparatory work helped produce one of Impressionism's most technically ambitious images of modern Paris.
