The Japanese Zen monk-painter Sesshū Tōyō created his celebrated haboku, or "flung ink," landscape in 1495, near the end of his long life. Working rapidly with a heavily loaded brush over still-wet washes, Sesshū built a mountain village scene from little more than blots and gestures, letting the ink itself suggest cliffs, trees, and mist. The original hanging scroll is designated a National Treasure of Japan and held at the Tokyo National Museum; this restrained, almost abstract style became a benchmark for later generations of Japanese ink painters.
