This plate represents the Harmonia Macrocosmica, the celestial atlas that the Dutch-German schoolmaster Andreas Cellarius published in Amsterdam in 1660, often celebrated as the single most beautiful star atlas ever printed. Cellarius mapped the heavens according to three competing cosmological systems of his day, those of Ptolemy, Copernicus, and Tycho Brahe, presenting each as equally worthy of study even as the scientific debate between them was far from settled. Its 29 double-folio engravings, framed by cherubs and astronomical instruments, have been reproduced and admired continuously since the 17th century, making the atlas as central to the history of celestial art as it is to the history of astronomy.
