The Story in the Margin
The Moulin de la Galette, a popular open-air dance hall on Montmartre also famously painted by Renoir a decade earlier, was one of the venues where Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec observed and sketched the dancers, drinkers, and onlookers of working-class Parisian nightlife. His version emphasizes the more shadowed, socially ambiguous edges of the crowd rather than Renoir's sun-dappled conviviality, reflecting Toulouse-Lautrec's characteristically frank, unsentimental eye. The painting shows him developing the sharp character observation that would define his later cabaret work.
