His version emphasizes the more shadowed, socially ambiguous edges of the crowd rather than Renoir's sun-dappled conviviality, reflecting Toulouse-Lautrec's characteristically frank, unsentimental eye. The painting shows him developing the sharp character observation that would define his later cabaret work.
