Beach at Low Tide (Mouth of the River) — Degas Pillow

Though best known for ballet and urban Parisian subjects, Edgar Degas also painted quieter landscapes and coastal scenes, often working in pastel to capture the flat, hazy light of the French coast at low tide. "Beach at Low Tide" reflects this less familiar side of his output, applying the same acute observational eye he brought to dancers and café scenes to the empty expanse of sand, water, and sky. Degas's landscapes, though a small part of his overall output, show his technical range beyond the figure subjects for which he is best remembered.
