Hinsdale sits in the far southwestern corner of New Hampshire, where the Ashuelot River meets the Connecticut River near the Massachusetts and Vermont borders, a location that made it a natural crossing point since colonial times. The town's water power drew textile mills through the 19th century, while its position on early rail lines linking the Connecticut River Valley to southern New England made it an important local transportation link. Hinsdale's spot at the meeting point of two rivers and three states gave it a strategic importance disproportionate to its small size, a fact New Hampshire's 19th-century mapmakers took care to document.
