Hondius World Map — Antique World Map Print

Jodocus Hondius, a Flemish engraver who spent years in London before settling in Amsterdam, acquired the copperplates of Gerardus Mercator's atlas from Mercator's heirs in 1604 and republished it two years later with 37 new maps of his own alongside Mercator's originals. His large wall map of the world, first issued in 1603 and revised in subsequent states, helped restore Mercator's reputation as the founder of modern cartography while establishing Hondius's own workshop as one of Amsterdam's leading map publishers. After Hondius's death in 1612, his sons and son-in-law Jan Janssonius carried the business forward, printing some 50 editions of the Mercator-Hondius atlas in the following decades.
