St John's Cathedral was consecrated in 1849 on Hong Kong Island, making it the oldest surviving Western ecclesiastical building in Hong Kong and the oldest Anglican cathedral in East Asia. Built in grey brick and stone in the Gothic Revival style, with lancet arches and ribbed vaulting, it served the colonial community from the earliest years of British Hong Kong. It stands on the territory's only freehold plot of land, granted in perpetuity in the 19th century.
