The Story in the Margin
This panel, showing Christ's Flagellation and Crowning with Thorns, belongs to the Colmar Altarpiece painted between 1462 and 1465 by Caspar Isenmann (c. 1410–1472/84), the municipal painter of Colmar and a key figure of the Upper Rhenish Gothic school, possibly a teacher of the young Martin Schongauer. Commissioned for the city's Church of St. Martin, the altarpiece originally comprised many panels illustrating Christ's Passion; seven survive and are now preserved in the Unterlinden Museum in Colmar.
