The Story in the Margin
Common ivy (Hedera helix) is an evergreen climbing vine native to Europe, western Asia, and North Africa, climbing by means of small aerial rootlets that cling to bark, stone, and walls. Young plants bear the familiar lobed leaf, but mature, sun-exposed growth produces unlobed leaves and clusters of greenish flowers that are a vital late-autumn nectar source, followed by blue-black berries relied on by birds through winter. Its evergreen cover and architectural leaf shape have made it a favorite subject in garden design and botanical illustration alike.
