The Story in the Margin
“The Garden of Eden with the Fall of Man” (c. 1615) is a remarkable collaboration between two of Flanders's greatest painters: Peter Paul Rubens (1577–1640), who painted the figures of Adam and Eve, and his close friend Jan Brueghel the Elder (1568–1625), who filled the paradise around them with over a hundred meticulously observed animals and plants. The painting captures the instant Eve offers Adam the forbidden fruit, the moment that triggers humanity's fall from grace. It hangs today in the Mauritshuis in The Hague.
