The Story in the Margin
“The Glass of Wine” (c. 1660) is one of Johannes Vermeer's intimate domestic interiors, showing a seated woman and a standing gentleman sharing a drink in a sunlit room. Vermeer (1632–1675), the Delft painter now considered among the greatest of the Dutch Golden Age, filled the scene with his signature clarity of light and quiet psychological tension — a stained-glass window bearing a figure of Temperance hints at the painting's gentle moral undertone. The work hangs today in the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin.
