Vermeer's View of Delft (c. 1660–61) is one of the most beloved cityscapes ever painted — his hometown seen across the harbor under a great, moody sky, its rooftops catching a sudden shaft of sun. Marcel Proust called it the most beautiful picture in the world. It is a treasure of the Mauritshuis in The Hague.
