John Constable - Blinding of Elymas | Fine Art Poster

This ink-and-wash sheet is John Constable's own copy after Raphael's celebrated "Blinding of Elymas," one of ten cartoons Raphael designed around 1515–16 for tapestries destined for the Sistine Chapel, commissioned by Pope Leo X. The scene depicts an episode from the Acts of the Apostles in which the sorcerer Elymas is struck blind by the Apostle Paul on Cyprus. As a young artist, Constable studied and copied Old Master compositions like this one, available to him through copies held at the Royal Academy, to sharpen his draftsmanship before developing his own celebrated landscape style.
