This sheet is John Constable's own ink-and-wash copy after Raphael's "Death of Ananias," one of ten tapestry cartoons Raphael designed around 1515–16 for the Sistine Chapel under Pope Leo X. The scene illustrates the Acts of the Apostles, showing Ananias struck dead at the feet of Saint Peter after lying about withholding money from the early Christian community. Like many students of his era, Constable copied such Old Master compositions early in his career to hone his figure drawing before turning to the landscapes that made his name.
