Drawn in charcoal around 1917, this study of a seated male figure with arms raised overhead is part of the large body of academic life drawings John Singer Sargent produced late in his career as preparation for the allegorical murals he painted for the Boston Public Library and other institutions. Worked with soft stumping for volume and quick, confident contour, it reflects the rigorous studio discipline Sargent maintained even as one of the era's most sought-after portraitists. The drawing is held today at the Art Institute of Chicago, a gift of Robert Allerton.

Jacquard-woven as a soft, double-sided tapestry throw with fringed edges — a warm layer for the sofa or bed.
