This charcoal figure study is one of hundreds of academic nude drawings John Singer Sargent made between about 1917 and 1921 in preparation for the allegorical figures in his mural cycles at the Boston Public Library, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, and Harvard's Widener Library. Rendered with bold stumped charcoal and sure contour lines, the sheet also carries a secondary sketch of a kneeling nude and a divided circle on its reverse. It belongs to the Art Institute of Chicago's Friends of American Art Collection.
Jacquard-woven as a soft, double-sided tapestry throw with fringed edges — a warm layer for the sofa or bed.
