This sheet of charcoal and graphite studies isolates the legs and feet of a model in a series of quick, exploratory sketches, part of the extensive body of life drawings John Singer Sargent made between about 1917 and 1921 while preparing figures for his mural commissions. Drawings like this one reveal the disciplined, ongoing study of anatomy that underpinned even his most spontaneous portrait work. It is held today in the Art Institute of Chicago's Friends of American Art Collection.
