John Singer Sargent painted this sun-washed watercolor in 1908 while visiting the city of Tarragona on the eastern coast of Spain, capturing a shaded terrace and garden in the loose, luminous washes that defined his mature watercolor style. The work reflects his practice of seeking out quiet architectural and garden corners while traveling, painting quickly to catch the changing Mediterranean light.
