Painted between about 1883 and 1889, this watercolor captures a tangle of windblown thistles rendered in broken brushwork and vivid, almost abstract patterning that flattens the picture plane. John Singer Sargent painted the humble botanical subject while working in the English countryside, using it to experiment with color and gesture outside his formal portrait commissions. It is now held in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago.
