Painted in 1914 in the Tyrol region of the Alps, this watercolor uses scraping and wax-resist techniques over graphite to render the rough wooden textures of alpine woodsheds. John Singer Sargent, who signed the sheet 'John S. Sargent, Tyrol,' brought the same virtuosic handling of light and surface to this rural architectural subject that he applied to his society portraits. The work is held in the Art Institute of Chicago's Olivia Shaler Swan Memorial Collection.
