Exhibited in 1837, "Valley of Aosta: Snowstorm, Avalanche, and Thunderstorm" is a late, dramatic example of J.M.W. Turner's fascination with the sublime violence of nature in the Alps. Turner had toured the Aosta Valley in Italy's northwest, and here combines several extreme weather events into a single overwhelming vision, dissolving the mountain landscape into swirling light, snow, and cloud. The painting exemplifies Turner's late style, in which recognizable topography gives way increasingly to pure atmospheric sensation.

Four stars because it is excellent and I paid a little more than I wanted to. There is more going on in Valley of Aosta Snowstorm than I noticed on the website. It works well in a split-level that has been hard to decorate. Nearly perfect, and I am not complaining.
