Jupiter, king of the gods, sits enthroned within a mandorla — the almond-shaped halo medieval artists reserved for Christ in Majesty — grasping a spear that stands in for his thunderbolt while the bodies of his victims lie scattered below. The eagle and child beside him recall Ganymede, the beautiful youth Jupiter, disguised as an eagle, carried off to serve as cupbearer on Olympus. Sixth among the seven planetary spheres that close the Tarocchi's cosmological hierarchy, this plate belongs to the 50-engraving E-series made in northern Italy around 1465, a catalogue of human society, the Muses, the arts and sciences, and the virtues — never a deck used for card play. The series still carries Andrea Mantegna's name by long tradition, but modern scholarship doubts he engraved it, and its true author is unresolved.
