Kingfield sits in Franklin County in the foothills of Maine's western mountains, a rugged region where the Carrabassett River cuts through valleys later prized for logging, and eventually for the skiing that made nearby Sugarloaf Mountain a major resort. The town was also the birthplace of the Stanley twins, Francis and Freelan, inventors of the Stanley Steamer automobile, whose early experiments with steam power began in the family workshops there. Like much of interior Maine, Kingfield's economy through the 19th century depended on its forests, and county maps of the period carefully marked its mills, roads, and river crossings for travelers and timber companies alike.
