This landscape pays homage to Guo Zhongshu, a 10th-century calligrapher and painter active during the transition from the Five Dynasties period into the early Song dynasty. Guo Zhongshu was celebrated in his own time for meticulous "boundary paintings" of architecture and landscape, and later Chinese artists frequently painted "after" him — a respectful practice of reinterpreting an old master's style and structure as a way of studying tradition while adding one's own hand.
