Ni Zan, one of the Four Masters of the Yuan dynasty, developed a radically spare landscape formula in the 14th century: a foreground of a few bare trees, a wide empty river, and a distant, sketched-in bank, rendered in dry brushwork with almost no human presence. This later landscape follows Ni Zan's format, a tribute paid by generations of Chinese literati painters who studied his austere compositions as a benchmark of restraint and quiet feeling.

The image looks fine from across the room and falls apart when you get closer. Something about the crop of Landscape Ni Zan cuts closer to the edge than it should. There is visible pixelation in the finer areas. It is going in the sunroom where nobody looks.
