The Qing-dynasty painter Zha Shibiao compiled an album of landscapes in 1684, each leaf reinterpreting the brush manner of a different old master he admired — a common literati exercise that treated painting history itself as a worthy subject. This leaf, painted in ink and light colour, shows Zha moving fluidly between the dense, textured styles of earlier masters and looser, more spontaneous brushwork of his own.
