The Story in the Margin
Alexander Gardner made this portrait of Abraham Lincoln in February 1865, only weeks before the president's assassination. The single glass negative cracked and was printed just once before being discarded — leaving a haunting fault line arcing across the careworn face of a leader at the very end of the Civil War.
