This hanging scroll, painted in ink, color and gold on paper during the Qing dynasty (1600s), depicts a lineage of Buddhist monks in formal portraiture, a genre used within monasteries to honor and record a temple's line of revered teachers. Lineage portraits like this one served both devotional and historical purposes, preserving the memory and spiritual authority of past abbots for the monks who followed them. The painting is held in the public-domain collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art.
