By the late 16th century, London had grown into one of Europe's largest cities, its skyline dominated by Old St Paul's Cathedral and crossed by the single span of London Bridge, then lined on both sides with shops and houses. The city sat at the heart of England's expanding overseas trade, its wharves along the Thames crowded with merchant ships bringing goods from across Europe and, increasingly, farther afield. Printed views of London from this period, made before the Great Fire of 1666 destroyed much of the medieval city, are treasured today as rare records of a London that no longer exists.
