Macgillivray's Ground Warbler. I. Male. II — Antique Bird Print

MacGillivray's Warbler is a secretive warbler of dense western thickets and mountain undergrowth, named by John James Audubon in honor of his close friend and editor William MacGillivray, the Scottish naturalist who helped him write Ornithological Biography. It skulks low to the ground, hopping through brush with its tail cocked as it hunts insects. This plate of a male and female was engraved by Robert Havell Jr. for Audubon's The Birds of America (1827-1838).
