Machias — Antique Map Print

Machias, on Maine's rugged Down East coast, holds a distinctive place in American history as the site of the first naval battle of the Revolutionary War, fought in June 1775 when local residents seized the armed British schooner Margaretta after its commander tried to force them to supply lumber for British barracks in Boston. Led by Jeremiah O'Brien, the townspeople's improvised crew captured the British vessel in a short, fierce engagement, an act of defiance still commemorated in Machias today and considered by many historians to mark the birth of the American Navy. Beyond its revolutionary history, Machias developed as a lumber and shipbuilding port along the Machias River, a role reflected in the detailed maps that documented the town through the following century.
