This gum tempera and gold painting, made around 1710 in Mughal India, illustrates a scene from a poetical romance associated with Emperor Shah Alam I, showing Mahliqa, daughter of the Emperor of China, pointing at the mysterious bird-man Khwaja Mubarak. Mughal manuscript painting of this era continued to prize intricate detail, luxurious gold ornament, and richly narrative storytelling scenes drawn from Persian and Indian literary traditions.
