Map of the Terrestrial Paradise, M. Huet's — Antique Art Print

Pierre-Daniel Huet, the Catholic bishop of Avranches in France, devoted a 240-page treatise published in 1691 to identifying the precise location of the biblical Garden of Eden, working word by word through the geographic clues in the Book of Genesis. He concluded that paradise once stood near the confluence of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, in the land the Bible calls Cush, and the map accompanying his treatise, later published separately by the Amsterdam firm of Pieter Mortier, illustrated this reasoning as a bird's-eye view of the Persian Gulf region. The map represents a distinctly 17th-century impulse: applying the era's new tools of rigorous scholarship and cartography to questions of biblical history.
