In 1648, the Amsterdam publisher Joan Blaeu released a world map that stands as one of the crowning achievements of Dutch Golden Age cartography, showing the entire globe as two hemispheres on a scale rarely attempted before. The finished map measured nearly seven by ten feet, printed from 21 copperplate sheets and incorporating the latest geographic knowledge gathered through Dutch trade and colonial voyages. Blaeu, son of the mapmaker Willem Blaeu, built on his father's legacy to make the family firm the most celebrated cartographic publishing house in 17th-century Europe.
