The Story in the Margin

Maples (genus Acer) comprise over 130 species prized for their palmately lobed leaves, brilliant autumn color, and distinctive winged samara seeds that spin like tiny helicopters on the wind. Long favored as shade and ornamental trees for their fast growth and easy transplanting, several species are also tapped for sweet sap, most famously boiled down into maple syrup, while their fine-grained wood has furnished cabinetmakers for generations. Maple's graceful leaf shape and seasonal color made it a natural subject for the illustrators who catalogued the trees of temperate forests.
