Mars appears not in his usual war chariot but enthroned on a triumphal carriage, a wolf — the animal sacred to him — crouched at his feet. Rome elevated this god of war above his Greek counterpart Ares, and the Tarocchi's design reflects that martial gravity, presenting him as a conquering ruler rather than a mere fighter. Fifth in the series' ascending run of planetary spheres, between the Sun and Jupiter, the card belongs to the 50-plate E-series engraved in northern Italy around 1465, a visual encyclopedia of social rank, learning, and virtue climbing toward the heavens — never an actual deck used for play. Long attributed to Andrea Mantegna, the series is now generally believed to be the work of an unknown engraver, sometimes called the Master of the E-series Tarocchi.
