Meredith sits on the western shore of Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire's Lakes Region, its village center built around the falls where Lake Waukewan's outlet drops toward the big lake, power that ran textile and hosiery mills through the 19th century. The completion of the railroad to Meredith in the 1850s opened the town to summer tourism even as its mills continued operating, giving it the same dual identity as many Lakes Region communities: working mill town by season and vacation destination by summer. Meredith's position on one of New Hampshire's most scenic lakes made it a frequent subject for the detailed maps documenting the state's growing lake-country tourism trade.
