Mount Hua, or Huashan, rises sharply from the plains of Shaanxi province as one of China's Five Great Mountains and a revered site of Taoist practice since at least the Han dynasty. Its narrow granite ridges and plunging cliffs — laced with shrines, hermitages, and famously precarious plank walkways — have made it a recurring subject for Chinese landscape painters seeking to capture both the physical drama of the peaks and their symbolic role as a dwelling place of immortals.
