Fungi proved a uniquely difficult subject for early natural historians: lacking obvious seeds or flowers, mushrooms were long assumed to arise from "spontaneous generation" until the Italian botanist Pier Antonio Micheli, considered the founder of mycology, demonstrated in his 1729 Nova Plantarum Genera that fungi grow from spores that reproduce true to type. Illustrating them accurately was its own challenge, since color and form fade within hours of picking, which pushed artists toward careful studies made from freshly gathered specimens. By the 19th century, dedicated mycological illustrators, including Anna Maria Hussey and Beatrix Potter, who painted hundreds of British fungi in watercolor during the 1890s, had elevated the mushroom study into a distinct and rigorous branch of botanical art.
