The Story in the Margin
This beach view was painted after Jacob van Ruisdael (1628/29–1682), the towering landscape painter of the Dutch Golden Age whose seascapes and dune views were widely copied and adapted by other artists of his time. Ruisdael painted the Dutch coastline throughout his career, capturing wide skies, breaking surf and figures scattered along the shore with the same close observation he brought to his forest scenes. This version is held in the Mauritshuis in The Hague.
